KATHMANDU, January 11 – Prashant Tamang, the celebrated winner of Indian Idol Season 3, has passed away at his residence in Delhi on Sunday, media reports say.
While the specific cause of death of the 43-year-old singer and actor has not been officially detailed by his family, news of his demise has sent shockwaves through the music and film industries in both India and Nepal.
A Remarkable Journey: From Constable to Superstar
Prashant Tamang’s story remains one of the most inspiring "underdog" tales in Indian television history.
A constable with the Kolkata Police at the time, Prashant auditioned for Indian Idol in 2007 and quickly became a national sensation. His victory was fueled by an unprecedented wave of support from the Gorkha community in Darjeeling and all over India, including Nepali fans worldwide, earning him the title "Pride of the Hills."
Following his win, he released the hit album Dhanyavad and became a prominent playback singer, particularly in the Nepali music scene. He successfully transitioned into acting, starring in blockbuster Nepali films such as Gorkha Paltan and Pardeshi.
Most recently, in 2025, Prashant earned widespread critical acclaim for his chilling performance as the antagonist "Daniel Lecho" in the second season of the hit web series Paatal Lok.
As news of his passing spread, fellow artists, former colleagues from the Kolkata Police, and fans have taken to social media to express their grief. He is remembered not only for his soulful voice but for his immense humility and the way he united people across borders.
Prashant is survived by his wife, Geeta Thapa, and their daughter.
