New York, July 15: UN Secretary-General António Guterres has emphasized that skills are not merely tools, but engines of empowerment and opportunity. Marking World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) on 15 July, he called on everyone to play their part in equipping every young person with the skills needed for the digital age, and to help close the digital divide so that all youth can reach their full potential.
“From traditional knowledge to creative arts to community leadership, a diverse range of skills enables young people to shape their futures and build more inclusive, peaceful, and sustainable societies,” said Guterres in his message for WYSD. “We recognize that skills are not just tools – they are engines of empowerment and opportunity.”
Reflecting on the 2025 WYSD theme, “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills,” the Secretary-General underscored the growing importance of digital and AI competencies. “From basic digital literacy to advanced data science, these capabilities are increasingly vital for young people to thrive today — and lead tomorrow,” he noted.
However, he cautioned that “opportunity must be universal,” stressing the urgent need to bridge the digital divide. “Digital education must be human-centred, nurturing not only technical ability but also creativity, critical thinking, and compassion.”
“As AI reshapes our world,” Guterres concluded, “young people must be seen not only as learners — but as co-creators of a fairer digital future.”
